Charlotte-042 was the product of an experiment performed by Kiera, a scientist.
Kiera decided to set her eyes on an experiment which she thought not possible. To create a humanoid creature. This project was kinda done because she wanted to set her eyes on a large experiment (potentially to impress her friends? It wasn't made to clear...) However, as much as she tried to keep it hidden from her friends, certain factors made it kinda obvious for them to notice. They eventually found out when she had finished creating her.
Charlotte-042 was created in the space of around 2 weeks. Initially, Kiera attempted to spend a month trying to get her to do chores she didn't really want to do, so Charlotte at least had a purpose.
She understood basic instructions, Kiera had attempted to program some intelligence, but ultimately she roped in one of her friends to do this instead as her knowledge on this wasn't vast.
Skip forward a few months and Charlotte became quite knowledgeable on certain things and was also able to help Kiera with her science projects occasionally, especially, if they weren't too complicated.
As for the 042 part of her name, that's just there because Kiera wanted to make Charlotte's name sound more scientific.
